Bloke I worked with years ago lived on the Isle of Wight, only made the commute on Monday mornings and Friday nights though, stayed with a mate during the week. One of the girls that works for me now gets up at 4:15 to be at her desk by 7:30. Lives on the Essex/Suffolk border I think.

Fella I work with comes down from LEEDS 3 times a week.
Think it's quite common because he can do Leeds to London not too shy of your journey to Uxbridge.

2 hours in and 2 1/2 hours back on an average day door to door
unless the roads are fucked up as they so often are then it gets worse

I think the price and the services into London are ridiculous. Getting on the 19th century trains I do each morning would ruin any sane man.

A friend of mine moved to France two years before he officially retired and for those final two years he commuted every day from his home in North West France.
His commute was something like get up at 3:30am and drive to Lille. Then the Eurostar from Lille to St Pancras and then the tube to his office. Then back again all in the same day. Home for around 9pm.
That is one tough commute.

I used to do Burnham on Crouch (east coast Essex) to Tottenham Court Road or Euston.
That was an f'ing nightmare ... One of the reasons I became expat ... 15 mins travel at most an equal or higher salary with less expenses!

Only an hour train journey, shoebury to fenchurch st and then a 3 minute walk.
I don't understand the people who drive it. Must take 2 hours each way in the traffic.

all depends on circumstances mate. the further out you live the better value you get on house prices, some people prefer a nicer way of life living out in the sticks a bit.

Used to commute from Huntingdon to Aldgate
45 minutes Huntingdon to Kings X and virtually the same again most days for the journey from Kings X to Aldgate.
Once spent 5 hour round trip getting to Stevenage and back when overhead lines were down - that's when I decided to start working from home full time.
Now I do 8 till 4 every day, walk the dog at lunchtimes (or during tedious conference calls where senior management tell us how great we all are).
Downside is I miss all the hilarious office banter, but given that most of the people I work with are knobs, I'm not that fussed.
